Dear campus community,
Two weeks ago, Vice President for Student Affairs Mari Fuentes-Martin sent a campus-wide message about racist graffiti found in our housing facilities. On Tuesday, November 18, we discovered additional graffiti including antisemitic, anti-Asian and anti-Muslim rhetoric as well as threats of violence toward members of our community in one of our academic buildings. University Police Department (UPD) is in an active investigation to determine who committed these acts and to hold responsible parties, whether affiliated with our campus or not, accountable for their actions. In the meantime, the graffiti has been removed.
Although we have not identified the individual or individuals responsible, UPD, in collaboration with campus partners, is working to ensure the continued safety and security of our community. And, the university has invested in additional security measures including expanded security cameras in public and exterior areas of residence halls and lighting improvements to increase visibility and deter misconduct. Additional foot patrols by UPD and staff to provide a stronger safety presence.
We are aware that information and images about these incidents are also being circulated on social media. UPD needs your assistance identifying all parties responsible. Spartans look out for each other. If you have any information that would assist with this investigation, report it immediately either by calling UPD at (408) 924-2222, reporting through the Spartan Safe mobile app, or by using one of the following links:
These sorts of incidents can be very traumatic and we want you to know that we are here for everyone in our community. For students who need support please contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at (408) 924-5678 or visit sjsu.edu/wellness. Employees in need of support are strongly encouraged to contact the Employee Assistance Program.
Together, we must continue to uphold dignity, compassion and respect for one another. Thank you for helping make San José State a place where everyone can live, learn and thrive in safety.
Sincerely,
Vincent J. Del Casino, Jr.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
