Dear Spartan Community,
I want to provide you with an important update following my earlier message regarding graffiti and threatening language discovered in one of our academic buildings.
University Police Department (UPD) continues the investigation and Chief Michael D. Carroll reports that “the risk assessment at this time is low." Given the low risk assessment, the campus remains open and all classes and activities will continue as scheduled. Though UPD has determined there is no evidence of a credible threat of violence to our campus community, we are still seeking the community’s assistance in identifying the person who wrote a threatening message in one of our academic buildings.
Your safety remains our highest priority. We will remain vigilant. Per standard protocol regarding such incidents, the FBI has been notified. Out of an abundance of caution, we also notified the San José Police Department, should we need assistance on campus. UPD will take additional steps to enhance campus security in the coming days including increased foot patrols on campus, monitoring social media and other forms of communication for additional messaging. In addition to these immediate measures, the university has recently expanded security camera coverage, improved lighting, and increased patrols to more broadly improve campus safety and security this semester. These actions are designed to deter misconduct and provide reassurance to our community.
We also recognize that incidents like this can cause fear and anxiety. Support is available for students, who may contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at (408) 924-5678 or visit sjsu.edu/wellness. Employees in need of support are strongly encouraged to contact the Employee Assistance Program. We ask that you please be flexible and patient with one another as everyone manages this situation in their own way.
If you have any information that would assist with this investigation please report it immediately either by calling UPD (408) 924-2222, reporting through the Spartan Safe mobile app, or by using one of the following links:
Thank you for continuing to look out for one another and for helping us foster a safe, inclusive environment where every Spartan can thrive. If there are any further developments, we will update you again.
Sincerely,
Vincent J. Del Casino, Jr.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
