The Department of Counselor Education (EDCO) is excited to welcome Minyi “Minnie” Li as a tenure-track assistant professor of clinical counseling. Currently completing her Ph.D. in counseling at the University of Rochester, Minnie will join the department in January 2026, following her August 2025 graduation.
An independently licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) in Maryland, Minnie earned her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Johns Hopkins University. She has provided therapy across diverse clinical settings, including community nonprofits, university counseling centers, private practice, general hospitals, and psychiatric hospitals, working across all levels of care.
Minnie’s passions include integrating creativity, expressive arts, and mind-body approaches into therapy, supervision, and counselor education. She is also dedicated to preparing counselors to support clients with eating disorders while addressing diet culture and weight stigma. She looks forward to collaborating with students and colleagues at San José State University to enhance counselor training and serve community needs.
We look forward to welcoming Minnie to the Lurie College family in January!

LCOE STUDENT HARDSHIP FUND
The Connie L. Lurie College of Education makes funds available to support students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment. Most often cited are the challenges of meeting the costs of living (transportation, rent, and other expenses) during the unpaid student teaching/ counseling requirements for becoming an educator.
"I am very grateful to have received the Hardship Grant! Because of the funding, the cost of gas for my internship has been covered which is really helpful for me. I'm really grateful that the Hardship Grant exists because it increases the equity for students who are financially insecure. Thank you so much to the committee and donors!"
