FAREWELL NOTE FROM

DEAN HEATHER LATTIMER

Dear Lurie College Family —

It has been an incredible privilege to serve as Dean of the Connie L. Lurie College. This college is home to faculty, staff, students, and alumni who are brilliant, accomplished, visionary, innovative, caring, collaborative, and deeply dedicated to the success of our community and the strength of our mission. Thank you for so generously welcoming me as a new dean six and a half years ago and for your friendship and support in the years since. Thank you for your fearlessness in building a bold vision together; your tenacity as we pursued our common priorities in the face of COVID, budget challenges, and shifting state and federal policies; and your consistent ethic of care for one another and our larger community. Thank you for challenging me, inspiring me, pushing me, and teaching me — you have made me a better leader and a better person.

It is extremely hard to say goodbye, but I am very confident in the future of Lurie College. Individually and collectively, you are amazing! Lurie College programs continue to garner national attention, enrollments are robust, funders are engaged, student success is strong, and faculty research is thriving. David Whitenack will be an outstanding Interim Dean and the college is very well positioned to attract exceptional candidates for the permanent dean position. I’m excited for you to work with your next dean to "freedom dream" the next iteration of Lurie College into being. I look forward to cheering you on from afar and celebrating your successes.

Please do stay in touch… My new email at Cal State LA is [email protected], my personal email is [email protected], and my cell is 858-775-6070. Please also connect with me on LinkedIn, and if you are in LA, please stop by campus...I would love to catch up in person.

As I prepare to leave, please allow me to offer one final encouragement. At a moment when public education and the core values of our democracy are facing unprecedented pressure, I urge you to hold onto the equity and justice driven commitments that have grounded our college’s collective vision. Do not allow vitriol and bluster intimidate you into backing away from our common priorities. Continue to center the vital work of nurturing individual and collective well being, creating spaces of belonging, and advancing opportunity. This is the work that led many of us to choose to pursue careers in public education. It is the consensus that has energized and galvanized our college over these past six years. And it is the continued commitment that our students, colleagues, and communities deserve.

Thank you for everything!
Heather

LCOE STUDENT HARDSHIP FUND

                                   Graduate 290x 150.png
The Connie L. Lurie College of Education makes funds available to support students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment. Most often cited are the challenges of meeting the costs of living (transportation, rent, and other expenses) during the unpaid student teaching/ counseling requirements for becoming an educator.

"I am very grateful to have received the Hardship Grant! Because of the funding, the cost of gas for my internship has been covered which is really helpful for me. I'm really grateful that the Hardship Grant exists because it increases the equity for students who are financially insecure. Thank you so much to the committee and donors!"
