FAREWELL NOTE FROM

DEAN HEATHER LATTIMER

Dear Lurie College Students —

This is my final letter to you as Dean. Friday, February 28 will be my last day at SJSU. Beginning on March 1, I will be moving to Cal State, Los Angeles to serve as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. David Whitenack, Professor of Teacher Education here at SJSU, will serve as Interim Dean through Spring and Summer 2025 while the university searches for the next permanent Dean of Lurie College of Education.

It has been an incredible privilege to serve in this role. This college is home to students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are brilliant, accomplished, visionary, innovative, caring, collaborative, and deeply dedicated to the success of our community and the strength of our mission. Thank you for choosing to be part of this community. Thank you for allowing me to witness your achievements, learn from your insights, and be inspired by your stories. It has been truly an honor.

And thank you for choosing to pursue the academic and career pathways represented by the departments in our college. At a moment when the values of public education and inclusive democracy are facing unprecedented pressure - your voice, your vision, your resilience, and your tenacity are needed now more than ever. Lurie College maintains our commitment to preparing the transformative educators, counselors, therapists, school, higher education, and community leaders that our children and youth, our families, and our communities deserve. We stand with you and remain steadfast in our values and to prioritizing the success and well being of our community.

It is extremely hard to say goodbye, but I am very confident in the future of Lurie College. Individually and collectively, there is tremendous strength and incredible leadership in this college.

Please stay in touch… I love to celebrate your successes! Connect with me on LinkedIn, email me at my new at Cal State LA address, or stop by campus if you are in LA and we can catch up in person.

With deep appreciation -
Heather

Graduate 290x 150.png

What is the Hardship Fund?

The Connie L. Lurie College of Education was established to help students with emergency financial need. Thanks to the generosity of other students, staff, faculty, and the community, Lurie College is able to provide this grant to support its students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment at Lurie College and SJSU.

Since July 2019, the College has processed 190 awards for a total of $91,784. The awards had been fairly evenly split between undergraduate and graduate recipients.

Recipient Testimonial
"I am very grateful to have received the Hardship Grant! Because of the funding, the cost of gas for my internship has been covered which is really helpful for me. I'm really grateful that the Hardship Grant exists because it increases the equity for students who are financially insecure. Thank you so much to the committee and donors!"
