A MESSAGE FROM INTERIM DEAN
DAVID WHITENACK
Dear Lurie College Students,
We hope that the Spring 2025 semester has started well for you. Whether you’re beginning a program this semester, looking forward to Commencement in May, or somewhere in between those two stages on your journey with us, know that you belong at Lurie College. We look forward to continuing to support you in pursuing your educational goals.
This is a time of transition in the Lurie College of Education. Dean Heather Lattimer will step down at the end of this month to join CSU Los Angeles as their provost. Her collaborative and visionary leadership over the past seven years has brought our Lurie College family together through shared work that is community engaged, culturally sustaining, holistic, and interdisciplinary.
As we endeavor to build upon Dean Lattimer’s legacy, I have the privilege of serving as Lurie College Interim Dean for the rest of the semester and through the summer. Many of you know me as the chair of the Department of Teacher Education, where I have been a member of the faculty since 1996. I’m eager to work with Lurie College colleagues and all of you to realize our shared vision of providing the surrounding community with the outstanding counselors; educators; therapists; and leaders at the community, school, and university levels that they deserve.
I look forward to connecting with you at Lurie College events in the months to come. If there’s anything that faculty, staff, or leadership can do to better support you on your educational journey, please let us know. You’ve got this, and we’ve got you!
Onward ever,
David

LURIE COLLEGE HARDSHIP FUND

What is the Hardship Fund?
The Connie L. Lurie College of Education was established to help students with emergency financial need. Thanks to the generosity of other students, staff, faculty, and the community, Lurie College is able to provide this grant to support its students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment at Lurie College and SJSU.
Since July 2019, the College has processed 190 awards for a total of $91,784. The awards had been fairly evenly split between undergraduate and graduate recipients.
Recipient Testimonial
"I am very grateful to have received the Hardship Grant! Because of the funding, the cost of gas for my internship has been covered which is really helpful for me. I'm really grateful that the Hardship Grant exists because it increases the equity for students who are financially insecure. Thank you so much to the committee and donors!"
