Dear Spartan Community,
At San José State University, we embrace the diversity of our campus community and the unique perspectives that make us stronger. Inclusion is central to who we are—it’s a core value and a source of strength that drives our commitment to student success.
Today’s election occurs at one of the most partisan times in recent memory, yet Spartans have consistently faced such challenges with resilience, unity, and courage. Just weeks ago during Legacy Month, we were reminded of our commitment to these values—embodied by Tommie Smith, John Carlos, and countless Spartans who carry forward this courageous spirit. Through advocacy, voting, and resilience, our San José State community upholds democracy as a complex but enduring force—one that makes it possible for our values of inclusion to flourish within society.
As we move through Election Day, it’s essential to honor our democratic process and the freedoms we exercise when we cast our ballots. Voting is a powerful expression of our voices and values and forms the foundation of a democratic society. We recognize and thank those at our on-campus vote center for ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate. For in-person voters, remember that our polling center at the SJSU Provident Credit Union Event Center closes at 8 p.m.; if you’re in line by then, you have the right to cast your ballot.
As we await results, let’s be prepared to wait for accurate counts and trust in the integrity of the process. We also understand election season can bring stress, and we encourage our campus community to use available resources to manage uncertainty and foster self-care and support. You can find more about these resources here.
While voting is a vital part of civic engagement, our commitment to active citizenship extends beyond the ballot box. Opportunities to engage continue year-round—through discussions, advocacy, volunteering, and supporting our shared values. To further this commitment, we invite you to join events aligned with our values of democracy and inclusion. You can register to virtually attend the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) Summit, exploring socially impactful technology initiatives. Additionally, please join us for the Campus Climate Community Forum on Tuesday, November 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the MLK Library, Room 225. Facilitated by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, this forum centers on student voices and provides a space to discuss ways we can move forward together.
In unity, we remain dedicated to a future reflecting the highest ideals of equity, inclusion, and justice. Let’s stand together, listen with empathy, and support one another as we navigate this important time.
Sincerely,
Cynthia Teniente-Matson
President, San José State University
