SJSU DAY OF REMEMBRANCE 2024
|
|
|
|
Day of Remembrance is a national observance of the World War II incarceration of Americans of Japanese descent in the United States. It is recognized nationally on February 19th, the date that Executive Order 9066 was issued. In 1942, the building currently known as Yoshihiro Uchida Hall, located on SJSU's campus, served as a registration center for local Japanese Americans prior to them being forcibly removed to incarceration camps. President Cynthia Teniente-Matson recently issued a Presidential Directive to commemorate the Day of Remembrance.
SJSU recognizes this day to acknowledge the Japanese American experience and the campus’ connection to it. It is important that we know our history in order to advocate for a more socially just society moving forward. We also want to recognize and honor our connection to our Japantown community, who has contributed and supported our work on campus to acknowledge SJSU’s history. Nina Chuang, SJSU Alumni & former AS President, along with Dr. Yvonne Kwan, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of Asian American Studies at SJSU, will speak at the 44th Annual San José Day of Remembrance, which is a separate event.
SJSU’s Day of Remembrance on February 19th will feature guest speakers, a short film screening, an art walk and more. You can find more details about the schedule for the day here.

Supporting Future Educators through the Lurie College Hardship Fund
The Connie L. Lurie College of Education makes funds available to support students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment. Most often cited are the challenges of meeting the costs of living (transportation, rent, and other expenses) during the unpaid student teaching/ counseling requirements for becoming an educator.

The Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders
The Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders (KACCD) has long been a destination for persons and families seeking speech-language therapy services for communication and related disorders. For 6 decades, the clinic has provided no-cost-for-services to the South Bay community while training undergraduate and graduate students to become speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

Student Voices - The Art of Storytelling
Lurie College is partnering with The Moth through a weekend workshop intensive for 30 faculty and alums. This Professional Development focuses on learning what storytelling is, how to be a storyteller, and how to bring it into the classroom. The focus includes how to use an authentic voice while respecting boundaries. In addition, they will learn both how to give and teach crafting comments. The culmination of the weekend workshop is a grand slam storytelling session open to the community.
