Lurie College of Education is proud to receive the 2024 Christa McAuliffe Award; Diversifying the Teacher Pipeline from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. The Christa McAuliffe Award has long honored exemplary teacher education programs at AASCU member campuses that can document the success of their graduates in improving P-12 pupil learning outcomes. The award recognizes programs that have been adapted using evidence of P-12 impact in their pre-service and in-service programs.

In 1924, San José State students adopted Spartans as the official university mascot and identity, recognizing the legacy of social progress established by previous generations of educators, innovators and pioneers at One Washington Square. In the ensuing 100 years, as we emerged from the heart of San Jose to become Silicon Valley’s original startup, Spartans have advocated for civil rights, won Olympic medals, trained countless teachers, engineers and entrepreneurs, and helped transform the university into the epicenter of the future.

Our campus is on a mission to capture the history of Spartans at #SJSU, and they need our help! Contribute your favorite memory to the timeline — whether it's a personal achievement, a memorable event or a significant milestone. Together, we'll expand this timeline with our collective memories and experiences.

EDD GLOBAL FIELD EXPERIENCE RECAP

This summer, Lurie leaders Eduardo Muñoz-muñoz,Veneice Guillory-Lacy, and Liliana E. Castrellón led a group of students from Cohorts 9 and 10 of our Ed.D. Educational Leadership Program in a two-week global field experience in Spain with colleagues from the University of Cordoba. The experience was part of the program's goal of preparing leaders who can understand the causes of inequitable outcomes in education and develop ways to improve opportunities for all students, especially those from minority groups.

Check out these great photos of our amazing Ed.D. cohorts in Spain!

LCOE + SAN JOSÉ EARTHQUAKES

GAME NIGHTS RECAP

This summer, Lurie College partnered with the San Jose Earthquakes to put on education nights for our partnering summer cohorts and mentor teachers.  This exciting opportunity united our community in a special way as we welcomed friends, families, and future educators for two nights of fun.  Between the June 15th and July 13th games, we had 78 mentor teachers sign up!

We are thrilled to share that there will be future similar community opportunities such as these as we continue to seek out ways to engage in local, family-friendly spaces.  Check out these captured memories from this exciting collaborative night for our educators community.

Funder
Brady Education Foundation

FocusThe foundation invites applications for Existing Program Evaluation (EPE) proposals and Research Project (RP) proposals.

DeadlineStage-one proposals are due August 1, 2024, and selected applicants will be invited to submit a stage-two proposal, due December 1, 2024.  (Note: There will be another call for proposals in December).

Purpose:

The primary aim of EPE proposals must concern what works: evaluating the effectiveness of programs designed to promote positive cognitive and/or achievement outcomes for children (birth through 18 years), with the goal of informing ways to close the educational opportunity gaps associated with race, ethnicity, and income.

Secondary aims may also focus on what works for whom, under what conditions: investigate variations in program effects; that is, test for moderation effects that inform whether effects are stronger for certain groups and/or under certain conditions than other groups or conditions; reasons for effects: investigate mechanisms through which effects occur; that is, test for mediation effects that inform why the program is effective; and cost-benefit analyses: compare the total costs of the program (start-up and ongoing operational costs), with its estimated monetary benefits to determine the net cost or benefit associated with the program.

A message from The California State University, Academic & Student Affairs

Please consider sharing this resource that is now available for current and prospective teacher candidates on the Commission on Teacher credentialing website-  under their roadmap to teacher preparation section. This is a comprehensive listing of financial aid resources available to teacher candidates:

These resource materials were developed by a statewide intersegmental workgroup led by WestEd, that I represented the CSU on. A companion piece on how to braid funds to support clinically rich programs such as residencies will be released soon, also on the CTC website. Both resources have been field tested by faculty, program directors, and students and revised per their feedback.

If you would please share these links widely with program coordinators, advisors, recruitment contacts and others, so they may encourage students to look into the funding that is available to them as they pursue teacher credentialing.

Participant Testimonial
“ The Audit Your Syllabus course gave me a fresh perspective on a class that I’ve been teaching for a number of years. I regularly engage in course review, but I appreciated the opportunity to systematically study my course— highlighting accessibility, cost, and diversity. The design of the course is user friendly, materials are thought provoking, and reflection exercises are relevant. One of my favorite aspects of the course is the supportive community that Sara Bakalian and Jane Dodge foster. They are knowledgeable, inspiring, responsive, and encouraging.”
                                                  — Aubrey Uresti, Counselor Education Department

The participants in this Spring’s Audit Your Syllabus program took a deep dive into their own course syllabi and updated their materials for accessibility, cost, diversity! They also created surveys to gain valuable insight from their students. Are you interested in learning more? If so, please check out the  Audit Your Syllabus - Public Version  to get inspired!

Camtasia 2024 is now available for faculty and staff! Please complete the Camtasia Request Form to gain access. The new features in Camtasia 2024 are more useful for those creating non-academic videos, but for quick announcement videos, you might be interested in the open captioning feature. When each word is spoken, it’s highlighted on screen. These captions are open captions which means they’re burned into the video recording and cannot be turned off.

The eCampus team recommends using Panopto’s automatic captioning feature because they require less correcting and it’s quick and easy to share your Panopto videos with your students on Canvas!

LCOE STUDENT HARDSHIP FUND

                                   Graduate 290x 150.png
The Connie L. Lurie College of Education makes funds available to support students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment. Most often cited are the challenges of meeting the costs of living (transportation, rent, and other expenses) during the unpaid student teaching/ counseling requirements for becoming an educator.

"I am very grateful to have received the Hardship Grant! Because of the funding, the cost of gas for my internship has been covered which is really helpful for me. I'm really grateful that the Hardship Grant exists because it increases the equity for students who are financially insecure. Thank you so much to the committee and donors!"
