The SJ Earthquakes are partnering with the Lurie College of Education to honor future educators, and have generously provided tickets to an upcoming match.

CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH 2024

Dear Campus Community,
On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, we will celebrate Juneteenth, a day that Black and African American families and communities have celebrated for many years, paying tribute to their culture, strength and perseverance by commemorating the end of slavery in America. The campus will not be open for university business on Wednesday, June 19th in observance of the holiday.
Our campus community is commemorating Juneteenth in a number of ways, including participating in the California State University (CSU) System second biennial
Juneteenth Symposium
being held June 13-14, 2024 in Sacramento. The 2024 Juneteenth Symposium is designed to elevate the celebration and recognition of African American history and achievement while promoting and sustaining the anti-racism work underway across the CSU’s 23 campuses. SJSU is sending a delegation of more than 25 students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local community members to attend the symposium in person. All campus community members are invited to attend the symposium virtually. Register to attend the live stream using this link.
Additionally, SJSU is proud to be a sponsor of Santa Clara County’s African American Community Service Agency's (AACSA) 43rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration being held June 15, 12:00pm - 7:00PM, downtown San Jose, CA in the SoFA District (South 1st Street). This year we will also be tabling and interacting with participants to share information about our institution, highlighting the wonderful programs, research, and opportunities available. If you’re interested in volunteering to table, please sign up! Snacks will be provided for volunteers. As we take time to celebrate Juneteenth as a community, we also encourage you to continue identifying and taking steps towards addressing systemic racism and discrimination towards Black communities. Juneteenth is not only a day for celebration, it is an opportunity for us to continue the legacy of the work towards freedom and liberation.

TEACHING AND THINKING WITH A.I.
WEBINAR SERIES

|
|

AI Grading, Detection and Policies
June 17, 2024 -- 10am PST (120m)
AI is also changing how we think about average. If an AI can produce consistent "C" work, then we need to update our policies around grading: why would an employer hire a “C” student if AI can do that level of work? Together, we will design new rubrics for an AI era that articulate how human ‘quality’ goes beyond AI. We will discuss what policies and practices improve motivation and decrease cheating, and why.
AI Assignments and Assessments
June 24, 2024 -- 10am PST (120m)
All assignments are now AI Assignments. In the same way that the ease of finding information on the internet forced faculty to rethink what homework students did and how we wanted them to do it, we will all need an AI strategy for assignments and assessment. We will cover both ways to force students to write and alternative creative assignments that incorporate AI. Through a wide diversity of examples, we will also consider how we can reduce cheating and raise standards.

The GAANN Program provides grants to academic departments and programs of institutions of higher education (IHEs) to support graduate fellowships for students with excellent academic records in their previous programs of study who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in their course of study at the institution.

Creating a 21st Century Workforce of Youth and Adults with Disabilities Through the Transformation of Education, Career, and Competitive Integrated Employment Model Demonstration Project — Agency: U.S. Department of Education (USDE)
The purpose of this priority is to fund model demonstration projects designed to develop, implement, refine (as defined in this notice), evaluate, and disseminate, for easy adoption, new or substantially improved model strategies or programs to transition youth and adults with disabilities to CIE.

LCOE STUDENT HARDSHIP FUND
|
|
|
|
The Connie L. Lurie College of Education makes funds available to support students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment. Most often cited are the challenges of meeting the costs of living (transportation, rent, and other expenses) during the unpaid student teaching/ counseling requirements for becoming an educator.

Updates from the Center for Faculty Development and eCampus
Congratulations to the 35 faculty members that earned their certificate and digital badge in the early spring cohort of the AI Tools For Teaching & Learning Course offered by the Chancellor’s Office. Registration is now open for the summer cohorts (5/27-6/16, 6/24-7/28, 7/29-8/18).
Course Description: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence tools where guided experimentation empowers participants to understand some of the basics of AI functionality, including its workings and methods for detecting its usage. Learn basic AI terminology, engage in hands-on exploration of AI Tools, learn strategies for detecting AI-generated content, and techniques to address potential misuse of AI tools by students. Participants will apply the knowledge gained to develop a personalized AI use policy for their course, and find resources to maintain currency in this dynamic field.
Course Commitment: 3 weeks, 20-25 hours, online, asynchronous. Seating is limited due to high demand, so register early.
