LCOE STUDENT HARDSHIP FUND

The Connie L. Lurie College of Education makes funds available to support students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment. Most often cited are the challenges of meeting the costs of living (transportation, rent, and other expenses) during the unpaid student teaching/ counseling requirements for becoming an educator.

"I am very grateful to have received the Hardship Grant! Because of the funding, the cost of gas for my internship has been covered which is really helpful for me. I'm really grateful that the Hardship Grant exists because it increases the equity for students who are financially insecure. Thank you so much to the committee and donors!"

-Graduate Student, Speech Language Pathology Program

HELM SOCIAL MIXER RECAP

Shared by HELM Program Co-Coordinator and Educational Leadership Assistant Professor, Liliana E. Castrellón, PhD

On March 19, 2024 the EDLD 215: Contemporary Issues in Higher Education Course held a social/mixer at the Mosaic Cross Cultural Center in the student union! The purpose of the event was so that our masters students could connect with students who use various cultural centers in the student union. A key topic in our course is the role of cultural centers and other resources for minoritized students on college campuses. As such, HELM students were able to connect with the cultural centers in the union and the students who utilize the centers. For their final course project HELM students will interview a student who attended the social/mixer, they will then analyze the student interview and connect it to our course content. Once they have completed the interview and analysis they will create a digital counterstory using Adobe Products. The event was a great turnout and a way for our graduate students to move beyond the classroom, to engage in practical learning and relationship building across campus.

The Alumni Association recently sent out the invitation for our annual Celebration of Alumni Excellence event. I'm hoping to enlist your support by spreading the word as well! Please join us, and encourage your faculty and alums you are connected to, to register soon (faculty can register as recent alumni so they will not be charged). You can also   visit our website  for updates as we continue to add to our speaker list.

Lastly, it's never too soon to start planning for next year! I'd love your suggestions for panelists and program additions for 2025.

A note from Department Chair, Jason Laker

Dear Faculty Colleagues:

On behalf of the Department of Counselor Education Search Committee (Professors Dolores Mena, Kyoung Mi Choi, and myself), I am pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Grace Poon Ghaffari as our newest tenure-track Assistant Professor. Grace will join SJSU, the College, and the Department this summer. The position announcement sought a specialist in College Counseling and Student Development who can contribute to this growing specialization among our students along with the department’s broader curricular offerings.

Grace recently completed her Ph.D. in Higher Education from Azusa Pacific University. Her dissertation is entitled “Theories in the Flesh: The Embodied Lives of Asian/American Survivors of Sexual and Relationship Violence.” She holds a Master of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs from New York University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with an emphasis in International Issues from the University of California, Irvine. She is currently the Assistant Director, and Education and Outreach Manager for the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response & Education (SHARE) Title IX Office; and a Lecturer with the School of Medicine Prevention Research Center at Stanford University.

We look forward to welcoming Grace to our vibrant department and college community.

Sincerely,

Professor Jason Laker
