CALL FOR STUDENT NOMINATIONS

Please consider nominating one or more of your students for the  Outstanding Thesis Award and/or  Bertha Kalm Scholarship. Summaries of the award and scholarship are provided below; Click on the hyperlink for more details.

Bertha Kalm Scholarship - Due to LCOE scholarship committee on  3/22/24 at 5:00pm
  • This scholarship is the result of an endowment made by Bertha Kalm on behalf of her parents, Amanda and Charles Kalm. She established the scholarship in 1995 expressly "to support graduate students in any field of instruction, who need financial assistance to continue their education, and who demonstrate a desire to make a difference for humanity."
  • Up to four scholarships of $10,000 each will be awarded to students in the 2024-2025 academic year. In order to be eligible to apply, a student must be in the first year of their graduate educationFor purposes of this scholarship, a first-year student is one who at the end of the application semester will have completed fewer than half of the program-applicable units required for the program in which they are matriculated.
  • Only tenured or tenure-track faculty may put forward a student for consideration and must write the primary letter of recommendation.
  • Applications will be pre-screened at the college level. Up to four applications per college may be submitted to the College of Graduate Studies.
  • The application [pdf] should be completed by the student. The student should return the application and attendant documents (personal statement, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a resume or CV, and an additional letter of recommendation from another SJSU faculty member or from someone outside of SJSU [e.g., work supervisor, charitable organization, or undergraduate mentor]) to the faculty member supporting the application. The complete application will be forwarded by the referring faculty member to the student's college for their review.
  • Nominations are due to your college committee chair [email protected] by March 22, 2024 at 5:00pm.

LCOE STUDENT HARDSHIP FUND

The Connie L. Lurie College of Education makes funds available to support students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment. Most often cited are the challenges of meeting the costs of living (transportation, rent, and other expenses) during the unpaid student teaching/ counseling requirements for becoming an educator.

"I am very grateful to have received the Hardship Grant! Because of the funding, the cost of gas for my internship has been covered which is really helpful for me. I'm really grateful that the Hardship Grant exists because it increases the equity for students who are financially insecure. Thank you so much to the committee and donors!"

-Graduate Student, Speech Language Pathology Program

This new event takes the place of the previous Faculty Service Recognition & Awards Lunch and the Staff Service Celebration, bringing our campus community together to collectively celebrate these great achievements. In addition to recognizing service honorees, we will also present the Faculty and Staff awards.

View the honoree names on the  Celebrating Spartans webpage .

The program will be held from  1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  in the  Student Union Ballroom  with a reception immediately following.
