BLACK STUDENT SUCCESS SCHOLARSHIP

The California State University (CSU) has been committed to increasing student success and closing equity gaps through its Graduation Initiative 2025. The Black Student Success Scholarship is designated for students who have demonstrated leadership in increasing equitable access to higher education and undertaking community service related to Black student success. Service should promote anti-racism work and culture change to elevate Black excellence. These scholarships are open to undergraduate students attending any of the 23 universities across the CSU system.

Award amount: Six (6) $5,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2024-25 academic year.

Applicants must:
  • Have demonstrated an interest in Black community issues.
  • Have completed community service related to Black student success. Express current leadership qualities or the desire to be a leader in advancing anti-racism, equitable access to higher education and service related to Black and African American communities.
  • Demonstrate a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale and be in good academic standing.

  1. What are your motivations and goals for supporting Black community issues, and what relevant experiences or involvement in community service activities helped shape these goals?
  2. Tell us about a time you were not successful in accomplishing a desired goal. What did you learn from that experience?
  3. Provide an example of service beyond the classroom (i.e., have you taken on significant family obligations, served the Black community in a specific way, been involve in political action, worked/volunteered/interned at a particular organization, etc?).
Why is this example of service significant to you?

What is the Hardship Fund?

The Connie L. Lurie College of Education was established to help students with emergency financial need. Thanks to the generosity of other students, staff, faculty, and the community, Lurie College is able to provide this grant to support its students who have experienced an unforeseen financial hardship that will prevent them from continuing their enrollment at Lurie College and SJSU.

Since July 2019, the College has processed 176 awards for a total of $83,571.  The awards had been fairly evenly split between undergraduate and graduate recipients.

Recipient Testimonial
"I am very grateful to have received the Hardship Grant! Because of the funding, the cost of gas for my internship has been covered which is really helpful for me. I'm really grateful that the Hardship Grant exists because it increases the equity for students who are financially insecure. Thank you so much to the committee and donors!"

Achievements

Department of Child and Adolescent Development

ChAD Scholar, Barbara Boone won second place in the education category at the the 38th Annual Student RSCA Competition at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo!

"It was an honor and a privilege to represent San Jose State University and, more specifically, Lurie College of Education with a 2nd place win at the 38th Annual Student Research CSU, Cal Poly! This achievement would not have been possible without the consistent support and encouragement from several ChAD faculty members. I'd like to thank Dr.Bang for her seminar "Demystifying Research," which opened my eyes to the possibility of research as a career - and my faculty research advisor, Dr. Izenstark, for the opportunity to work with her, along with all her knowledge, patience, and support throughout the project. It was a truly amazing experience!" - Barbara Boone
