Dear Spartan Community,

Over the weekend, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Budget Act of 2024, which outlined the 2024-2025 fiscal year budget for the state. On Monday, the California State University provided a response to the signed budget’s impact on the system, which includes a 5% state funding increase as part of the multiyear compact agreement.

This increase, paired with a one-time cut of $75 million, produces approximately $165 million of new CSU operating budget funding. The outlook for upcoming fiscal years is not optimistic. I encourage you to read Chancellor Mildred Garcia’s message about the budget and the CSU’s outline for future budget cycles on their website.

University leadership has been reflecting on what this means for 2024-2025 and beyond. We are thankful this state budget was not, as the Chancellor indicates, a worst-case scenario, but we know we need to plan for challenging years to come.

As we prepare for the fall semester, we are in the process of developing materials to share about the direction forward for our SJSU budget. I look forward to sharing with you how we plan to keep our campus on track to create a financially sustainable budget model informed by both the opportunities and challenges ahead.

I wish you all a restful holiday weekend and look forward to seeing many of you again in a few weeks.

Sincerely,
