Dear Spartan Community,

After an amazing week of commencement ceremonies, we have even more to celebrate thanks to the success of our San José State athletics programs.

Who is ready for some NCAA Baseball?

In the perfect capper to what may be the most successful year ever for Spartan Athletics, our baseball team won the program’s first-ever Mountain West Conference Championship this weekend and they are advancing to the NCAA regionals for the first time since 2002.

Our Spartans will open the NCAA Tournament down the road at Stanford’s Sunken Diamond, where they will take on the top-seeded Stanford Cardinal on Friday at 2 p.m. Let’s give our Spartans the love and encouragement they deserve and show up in force! The first 200 San José State students that show a valid Tower ID Card at the Sunken Diamond Box Office can claim a free ticket courtesy of Spartan Athletics.

This has been an incredible year for the Spartans, with team and individual successes that have elevated our programs, and established our university as an athletics powerhouse within the Mountain West Conference and beyond.

We’ve experienced team success and individual success for our student-athletes. Our football team went to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Game in Boise, and we’ve won conference championships in women’s soccer and baseball. Our fighting spirit led to the success of our women’s golf and track and field programs and breakthrough seasons for programs such as men’s basketball, men’s soccer, softball and women’s volleyball, who experienced unprecedented success. And our campus was the proud host for championship events such as women’s water polo, showcasing our facilities.

Individual athletes shown as well. Our first NCAA Indoor All-American for a woman in track and field was earned by Emilia Sjostrand, while sophomore women’s golfer Lucia Lopez Ortega earned an NCAA Championship runner-up finish last week in Scottsdale. And our Spartan rosters are full of outstanding academic honorees with 125 student-athletes earning president’s scholar and dean’s list recognition.

I was so honored to be in attendance at the recent Sammy Awards to pay tribute to our student-athletes, whose successes in their sports, in the classroom and in our community help to lift the profile of the entire university.

We are spending the summer anticipating and preparing for the opening of new facilities, including the new Spartan Athletics Center inside CEFCU Stadium, which will most definitely raise our game even further.

Our university boasts such a diversity of opportunities for our students to not only be involved in, but to represent the university on a broader scale. We are so proud of everyone who wears the blue and gold with pride and excellence.

I hope to see you at the ballpark!

Thank you,
