Dear Spartan Community,

As the 2023-24 school year gets underway, I’d like to take a moment to say hello and welcome to San José State. Whether you have been part of the Spartan community for a while or, like me, are spending your first fall semester at SJSU, undoubtedly we are off to a good start.

As you know, San José State is one of the few major American universities situated in the midst of a thriving downtown. Our unique placement has allowed us to foster a vibrant campus for students, faculty and staff, and also to actively engage with our neighbors. This was evident at last week’s flag raising at City Hall, where San José City Council Member (and SJSU alum) Omar Torres joined other local leaders, community members and The Best Band in the Bay to celebrate our partnership. If you missed it, click the video below for a recap.

Now that we’ve taken a quick look back, let’s look forward. Our Weeks of Welcome celebration is happening throughout September, and includes more than 100 student events ranging from movie nights to wellness seminars, informational meetings to sporting events. And speaking of sports, I hope you’ll join me tonight at a double-header soccer match, and again Sunday afternoon for our football team’s home opener at CEFCU Stadium. Remember, all students, faculty and staff receive free admission!

Earlier this month, I gave my first Fall Address, which discussed some of the priorities our university will be pursuing this year. Holistic student academic success sits at the top of the list, and remains a priority for all of us. Please take advantage of the many resources available to you, and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions, comments, or just to say hello.

Welcome back and go Spartans!

Sincerely,
