Dear Spartan Community,

After an anxious few days on and around the UC Davis campus, Davis Police announced Thursday that a suspect has been taken into custody following a series of attacks, including one in which a UC Davis student was killed. These acts are abhorrent, and we stand in solidarity with our Aggie colleagues during this time of mourning.

Incidents like this can understandably produce anxiety. I want to assure you that the physical safety of our students, faculty and staff is our highest priority. We want to make sure that everyone is aware of the measures and resources that are in place.

  • UPD increased staffing levels have paved the way for increased patrols on campus.
  • All blue light phones on campus are operational and ready for use when needed. Note where they are as you move around campus.
  • “Ride, Hide, Fight” training is available on our website and groups can also request in-person training through UPD.
  • Campus escorts are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and safe rides are available Monday to Friday 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Additionally, we continue to strengthen our ability to respond quickly to emergencies. Over the coming months, UPD will continue to engage with the region’s emergency communications teams and cellular companies so that 911 calls originating from the campus will immediately be routed to UPD, enabling faster response times. Our strong relationship with the San Jose Police Department continues to augment and support our ongoing campus safety efforts and improvements. I encourage you to remain informed by following UPD’s social media and view the information and resources on its website.

We also want to offer up the following personal safety tips:

  • Be alert to your surroundings
  • Walk in well-lit and well-traveled areas on campus whenever possible
  • Walk with others whenever possible
  • Avoid locations or situations that make you feel uneasy. Trust your instincts.
  • Report anything suspicious immediately to University Police. If you see something, say something.
  • Put UPD’s number in your phone in case you need it quickly: 408-924-2222.
  • If you are in danger, call 911 immediately.

Please keep our friends at UC Davis in your thoughts.

Sincerely,
