Dear Spartan Community,
We proudly proclaim to colleagues, friends, family and others that we are Spartans. What it means to be a part of San José State University requires clearly outlining our foundation — which includes our present identity and our vision for the future. These guiding principles have been a priority of mine since I arrived at SJSU and were the topic of discussion at the Campus Summit held on April 24, 2023. Today, I share with you the finalized Mission, Vision and Values statements and the recalibrated Transformation 2030 strategic plan goals, desired outcomes and metrics for determining success.
I encourage you to review these carefully. I want to draw your attention to our five core value statements, which are supported by the Campus Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion’s Action Plan Framework. These core values are:
- We are Champions For Student Success
- We are Visionary and Community-Minded
- We are Inclusive and Equity-minded
- We are Trustworthy and Act with Integrity and Accountability
- We are Collaborative and Embrace Teamwork
These values exemplify how we must treat each other as well as how we want individuals outside of our campus community to perceive us when we share that we are members of this university.
While 2030 may feel far off into the future, it is also important to remember our Transformation 2030 strategic plan was finalized in 2019 — meaning we are nearly as close to the end as we are to when the goals were first assembled. As we have shifted fully into a post-pandemic space, our desired outcomes for our five goals needed to be reassessed to better represent the foreseeable future. While you may notice the five goals for the strategic plan have the same names from 2019, the goal statements have been updated. Additionally, the outcomes and metrics that define how we achieve these goals have been revised.
Thank you to all members of the campus community who provided input at the Values Summit, and to the campus leaders who have spent the past year not only finalizing the statements, but also engaging in meaningful dialogue about what it means to be a Spartan now and in the future.
